JOHN at the table looks up from the paper at his wife who is

on the phone to her mother.

ALICIA draped on the large daybed covered in cushions and

throws. She looks pale and tired.

                                   ALICIA

                             (in Greek?)

Yes mum, it's always the same. They

don't know but I'm the next one.

Hmmm, Hmmmm, yes, they have been

saying this for months but it is

not their fault mamma. Hmmm. Stop

worrying! I'm the first one on the

waiting list. The next heart is

                         mine. Mamma stop crying.

VICKY walks in and Alicia's dark eyes light up. Vicky is good

to go: short skirt, short top, large earrings, she quickly

throws her coat on to rush out.

                                   ALICIA (CONT'D)

Where you going? You are not going

                         out like that. John!

                                   VICKY

                         Mum. Jeez.

                                   ALICIA

                         John!

                                   JOHN

                         Darling. You cannot dress like

                         that, go upstairs and change.

                                   VICKY

                         Dad.

                                   ALICIA

Mum, I have to go. Bye, yes, yes,

mum I have to go. Vicky! Go back

                         and get changed.

John slowly gets up and goes out back. Vicky watches him

                                   JOHN

I need to get the car washed.

                                   ALICIA

You had it washed it yesterday. I'm

tired. Where are you going? Don't

leave now! Talk to your daughter.

                                   JOHN

                         I'm playing golf. Goodbye. Vicky,

                         listen to your mother.

                                   VICKY

                         Okay!

                                   JOHN

If you change I will drive you

                         to... where are you going?

                                   VICKY

                         The mall.

                                   ALICIA

The what? With whom? Since when do

you want to go to the shopping

center? Who are you going with?

                                   VICKY

No-one. Just some kids from school.

                                   ALICIA

Okay..., but you be home in time.

It's good, you finally have some

friends. I'm happy for you. Why did

Vicky rolls her eyes and goes back upstairs.

2     EXT. CAR - MOMENTS LATER

                                   JOHN

                         So, you are meeting friends?

                                   VICKY

                         Just some kids from school.

                                   JOHN

Okay, well, it is good for you to

get out of the house sometimes.

                                   VICKY

                         Like you, you mean.

                                   JOHN

Running a company is a lot of work.

                                   VICKY

                         Sure.

                                   JOHN

And.. your mother and I love you

very much. You know that. What are

you going to do at the mall?

                                   VICKY

                         I don't know, I never go.

                                   JOHN

                         Do you need any money?

                                   VICKY

                         Sure, thanks.

                                   JOHN

Here you go. Don't do anything

silly. Call me if there is

                         anything!

               She gets out.

                                   VICKY

                         I'm not 12. Thanks.

                                   JOHN

                         Bye. Have a good time.

                                   VICKY

                         Bye.

                                   JOHN

                         Don't be late.

John starts the car and drives down the road, around the bend

he pulls over. He is fumbling with his phone. Then he runs

his hand through his hair and decides to look up Molly. He

finds her number, breaths in deeply and dials.

                                   JOHN (CONT'D)

Molly, hi, it's John. Is this a bad

time? Are you busy now? Sure, sure.

                         See you soon.

3     INT. LIVING ROOM - EVENING

John walks back in. He chucks the car keys on the table.

Alicia is asleep on the daybed.

                                   ALICIA

                         Vicky?

                                   JOHN

                         No, me.

                                   ALICIA

                         What time is it.

                                   JOHN

                         8.30

                                   ALICIA

I sleep here tonight. I can hear

                         her come back in.

John doesn't reply and walks upstairs.

4     INT. KITCHEN - NEXT DAY - LATE AFTERNOON

Alicia, barefoot, is staring at the inside of the fridge,

picking out random items and putting them on a tray. Her long

hair and dress swaying around her thin, dark body.

                                   JOHN

What's for dinner? Where is Vicky?

                                   ALICIA

She is seeing a boy from school.

James. He's very polite, been over

once. Reminds me of my first

boyfriend back in Madrid, I could

have married him. He cared about

me. He would have let me follow my

dreams. He could make love all

                         night. I...

                                   JOHN

Please don't stop on my behalf.

Since when is she seeing him?!

                                   ALICIA

*What am I? Ask her yourself.

She grabs the tray and walks to the living room.

5     INT. LIVING ROOM - LATER

Vicky slams the door. She chucks her bag down and switches on

               the tv. Alicia wakes up.

                                   ALICIA

I didn't hear you come in. How was

school? Did your results come in?

                                   VICKY

                         Yeah.

                                   ALICIA

                         And?!

                                   VICKY

                         Not good.

                                   ALICIA

                         Well?

                                   VICKY

There weren't great. I'm not going

                         to college.

                                   ALICIA

But what do you mean no college,

you can retake... of course you are

                         going.

                                   VICKY

                         How?

                                   ALICIA

                         What do you mean how?

                                   VICKY

                         Mum, I don't care.

                                   ALICIA

Me est‡s tomando el pelo*. Vicky,

don't walk off like.... I'm talking

                         to you.

                                   VICKY

You don't understand. Mum! Who will

                         stay with you?

                                   ALICIA

                         Sweetheart, I'll be fine. There

will have been a donor by then.

They hear John come in. When he walks in Alicia rolls her

               eyes. Vicky runs upstairs.

Alicia shakes her head and lies down on the sofa. She closes

her eyes. John grabs a drink. Switches on tv.

                                   JOHN

                         What's for dinner.

                                   ALICIA

                         Paella in the fridge.

               SHe slowly gets up.

                                   ALICIA (CONT'D)

                         You should talk to her.

                                   JOHN

                         To Vicky? What about?

                                   ALICIA

She is not doing well in school. At

all. I don't know what she thinks

is going to happen. What will

happen to her? Who will look after

her if, if, things go wrong.

He walks to the kitchen. She closes her eyes.

6     INT. LIVING ROOM - EVENING

                                   JOHN

I hear your exam results... leave

                         something to be desired?

               Beat.

                                   ALICIA

                         Vicky?

                                   VICKY

                         Yes.

                                   JOHN

                         Do you need a tutor?

                                   VICKY

                         No.

                                   ALICIA

As that is all you can think off is

                         the reason.

                                   JOHN

                         You need better grades, Vicky.

                                   VICKY

                         I'm done.

               She gets up and leaves.

                                   ALICIA

                         Good talk.

As Alicia walks out behind Vicky, she is crying silently.

John looks at his phone and grabs his coat.

7     INT. LIVING ROOM - NEXT DAY - MORNING

John walks in. Vicky sits up. Eyes fuming and she's been

               crying.

                                   VICKY

                             (looking at her father)

                         I know dad.

John looks down at the snail mail.

                                   JOHN

What, darling. Have you slept here?

We need to talk about college.

                                   VICKY

Why I am not going? I know who

                         Molly is. Everyone knows dad.

                                   JOHN

                         Vicky.

                                   VICKY

What are you doing? Now, with mum

the way she is and everything.

John very busy opening the mail.

                                   JOHN

I don't know what you might be

                         suggesting. There is nothing going

on. In any case, you wouldn't

                         understand.

                                   VICKY

Yes, this is really hard to

understand. Damn right I do not

                         understand.

                                   JOHN

                         Hey, don't use that language!

                                   VICKY

                         Fuck you.

                                   JOHN

                         That's enough, Vicky.

                                   VICKY

That's enough?! You leave mum when

she is, like this. She might die

and you are like, screwing this

                         woman behind her back.

                                   JOHN

That's enough! You do not speak to

me like that! How about calming

                         down and stop interfering with

things that do not concern you. Oh,

what the... I am tired of this

whole bloody situation, I have had

                         enough!

               Alicia walks in.

                                   ALICIA

                         You have?

                                   VICKY

                         Mummy, are you okay?

                                   ALICIA

                             (calm)

                         No, I heard. I knew. I've known

this for months. This does not

surprise me, so predictable for a

man his age. Got bored did you? Who

                         is she?

                                   VICKY

                         Daddy, how could you.

                                   ALICIA

                         I knew it. You....

                                   JOHN

Okay - you have to just leave me

                         alone. Vicky, not you. Sorry.

                         Sweetheart, don't be upset.

                                   ALICIA

You will not have your midlife

crisis on my account! Oh my god, I

feel sick. I need my pills. You

know why he is still here..? He is

only here for money. Where are my

pills. Because of the business. I

will sell my shares. How would you

like that. Sell, to whomever I

                         like.

                                   JOHN

                         You can't do that, Alicia.

Alicia sits down and hyperventilates. John phone buzzes - It

says 'LIFE' on the display. (- or Doctor Raingold**)

                                   VICKY

                         Mummy calm down.

                                   ALICIA

He's useless Vicky. He thinks he

can do whatever he likes. Who is

she? Is she calling you now?

John is actually frightened. He stares at his phone.

Confused. Hesitating. 'LIFE' keeps buzzing. Vicky walks

               towards him.

                                   VICKY

                         Dad, say something. Dad!

                                   ALICIA

                         La madre que te pari—*.

                                   JOHN

I'm sick of this. You never did

anything for the business and you

                         know it.

John walks out, holding his phone.

                                   VICKY

                         Oh, mummy.

         8     EXT. GARDEN

He looks at his phone. He understands his power. He could end

                                                                CUT TO:

        10     EXT. GARDEN

John walks out into the garden and stretches out, he

breathes. Their fate is sealed. He experiences a freedom he

hasn't felt for a very long time.

        11     INT. KITCHEN

John rummaging through Alicia's handbag. He gets out her

phone and deletes missed hospital calls. He hears a door

shutting behind him, scares, and chucks the phone quickly

back in to the bag. Thinks, listens, and gets the phone back

out. He hold it under the tap for a second and dries it of

carefully before placing it back into her bag.

Time stands still. He leaves the house.

12     EXT. FOOTPATH JUST OUSIDE OF TOWN

John needs a walk, he feels elevated and has awakened. Turns

to see if anyone is there and when coast is clear. He shouts,

he almost cries, he is ecstatic. He cannot believe it. Then

his phone buzzes again. He looks: 'LIFE'

                                                                 CUT TO

        13     INT. DOCTOR'S OFFICE.

We see the DOCTOR RAINGOLD on the phone. The door opens and

DOCTOR MEIR sticks his bald head around the door.

                                   DOCTOR MEIR

                         Any news?

Raingold looks at his worried looking assistant.

                                   DOCTOR RAINGOLD

Well then...., who's next on the

                         list?

14     INT. KITCHEN - LATE AFTERNOON

John comes home, hangs up his coat and grabs a drink. Then he

               sees Vicky on her phone.

                                   JOHN

How are you feeling? Are you okay,

sweetheart? Come here. Why don't we

                         go do something fun together?

We could visit the talkies, that

has been a while, singing in the

                         rain is on.

                                   VICKY

                         If you want.

                                   JOHN

I'm so very sorry about the fight

this morning. It has nothing to do

with you, do you hear me? Nothing.

Best to forget about the whole

                         thing!

                                   VICKY

How can I? What about mum?

                                   JOHN

I will talk to her, I don't want

you to be concerned about things

between your mother and I. I will

talk to her and we will work it

out. It is a very stressful time

right now, for everyone. You want

                         something to drink?

                                   VICKY

                         Okay.

                         What does it mean 'life'?

                                   JOHN

                         What?

                                   VICKY

Life, it rang? On your phone?

                             (looks away)

                         Whatever..

                                   JOHN

                         No, it didn't.

He has to leave the room. His chest feels tight. He walks out

into the conservatory and unlocks his phone. He looks at the

missed calls from this morning. "LIFE". He swears and catches

               his breath.

                                   JOHN (CONT'D)

                         Oh, fuck. Vicky. No.

Through the conservatory window he spots Vicky sitting in the

living room. He turns. He knocks back his drink. Walks into

the garden and looks at his missed calls again. Then stares

               at Vicky though the window.

After a while she turns and spots him looking at her. Fear

engulfs him. She knows - she will figure it out.

        15     INT. KITCHEN

He is dialing the number but gets an answerphone. John walks

               back in.

                                   JOHN

                         Vicky, go get your mum.

                                   VICKY

                         Why?

                                   JOHN

Tell her I forgot about an

appointment because of our fight. I

                         didn't see it. I mean, I forgot.

                                   VICKY

                         You didn't see what?

                                   JOHN

That's what you get for being so

                         fucking overdramatic.

                                   VICKY

                         It's late.

                                   JOHN

Please go get her now, quickly.

Vicky stares at him. John is trying a smile.

                                   JOHN (CONT'D)

                         Go on.

                                   VICKY

                         Okay, relax.

               Vicky sloths upstairs.

                                   ALICIA

                         We don't have an appointment.

               Vicky doesn't answer.

John is downstairs in the kitchen, panicking.

                                   JOHN

                         Shit, shit.

                             (shouts up the stairs)

Are you there? You might want to

                         come out. Jesus Christ. The

                         hospital called.

No answer. He knows he should tone it down.

                                   JOHN (CONT'D)

                         I think doctor Raingold called.

Please come down. We have a doctors

appointment. We have to drive there

                         now.

                                   VICKY

                             (coming down the stairs)

                         In the evening?

                                   JOHN

                             (slowing it down)

It's not evening yet... Vicky, go

get your mother. The doctor called,

that's all. Because of all this

drama I forgot. (to himself) Oh,

                         fuck.

Vicky keeps walking down and sits in a chair. She looks at

her father. Eventually Alicia comes down. She walks to the

               car without saying a word.

                                   JOHN (CONT'D)

Vicky, you stay here. Go do your

                         homework.

He grabs her elbow and walks her to the bottom of the stairs.

                                   VICKY

                         Mum? What happened?

19     INT. KITCHEN - EARLY MORNING

John and Vicky are having breakfast but not eating, nobody is

               speaking. ALicia slowly enters.

Vicky sits staring at her mum. John is anxiously glancing at

Vicky, the silence is deafening. Eventually.

                                   VICKY

                         How could you miss it.

                                   JOHN

Well, that's what you get from

being so fucking dramatic. Are you

                         all happy now.

               Alicia slowly looks up.

                                   ALICIA

Don't speak like that in my house.

                                   VICKY

                         Yeah, it's my fault.

                                   JOHN

No, I do not think it is your ...

                                   VICKY

                         Good, me neither.

                                   ALICIA

Don't worry sweetheart, it will all

work out fine. Don't you worry.

There are other ways. I will think

                         of something.

                                   VICKY

                         How mum? How? Dad!

                                   ALICIA

                         Honey, sweetheart, don't cry, come

here. It will be fine I promise.

               John gets up.

                                   VICKY

                         I don't understand. What happened?

You waited so long. Why did they

give the heart to someone else.

                                   JOHN

                         I don't know what time I'll be

home, I'm playing golf after work.

                                   ALICIA

                         Come here my darling.

20     INT. LIVING ROOM - EARLY MORNING

John walks in. He takes of coat, puts bag down When he

switches on the light he sees Vicky sleeping on the sofa

               again. He scares.

                                   JOHN

Vicky! You have to stop sleeping

                         here!

                                   VICKY

                         Where have you been?

                                   JOHN

Go to bed. It is late.

                                   VICKY

Why haven't you been home? Mum is

                         feeling awful.

Pretending to look at work papers.

                                   JOHN

I don't want to talk about this

anymore. We are all in shock, it is

a terrible thing that this has

                         happened. You better stop worrying

about it. Time to move on, Vicky

                         and start concentrating on getting

                         yourself into college.

                                   VICKY

                         Move on from mum?

               Silence

                                   VICKY (CONT'D)

I'm not going to college. Who else

is going to look after mum.

                                   JOHN

I won't allow it. You are, of

                         course, going to college.

                                   VICKY

What's going to happen to mum, dad?

                                   JOHN

Well, there is aunt Carmen and ...

                         you shouldn't worry about things

                         like this.

She looks at him. John very uncomfortable.

                                   JOHN (CONT'D)

                         Go to bed.

                                   VICKY

                         Are you leaving her?

                                   JOHN

                         No.

               Vicky staring.

                                   VICKY

                         Because of the company?

               Beat.

                                   JOHN

Don't you worry about a thing my

                         darling. Goodnight.

21     INT. KITCHEN - LATE AFTERNOON - DREAM

John comes home, hangs up his coat and grabs a drink. Then he

sees Vicky on her phone. (or as scene 14)

                                   VICKY

                         What does it mean, life?

                                   ELIAS

Life is what I had put in my phone

for when the doctor had a

                         transplant ready.

                                   VICKY

                         Ah.

        22     INT. BEDROOM

               John wakes up in sweat.

23     INT. GARDEN - NEXT DAY

               John enters the living room.

                                   JOHN

                         Hello? Vicky?

He walks into the conservatory to find Vicky lounging in the

               garden in her bikini.

                                   JOHN (CONT'D)

                         Have you finished studying for

                         today already?

                                   VICKY

                         It's hot.

                                   JOHN

You better get out of the sun, and

                         you should be studying now.

               Silence

                                   VICKY

You know dad, most kids study in

                         the library.

                                   JOHN

                         Do they?

                                   VICKY

Yeah, and they don't live in

                         suburbia.

                                   JOHN

You can use your mother's car

                         whenever you like.

                                   VICKY

                         It's not the same.

               She sits up.

                                   JOHN

Well, I doubt we'll move to be

                         closer to the library.

                                   VICKY

                         I need my own car.

                                   JOHN

                         Don't be absurd.

                                   VICKY

Wouldn't you say my life is absurd -

don't you think! It's not like we

are a normal family. We've got all

this shit going on and I am stuck

                         in the middle, I'm trapped.

                                   JOHN

That's no reason... And don't use

                         those words.

               Silence

                                   VICKY

                         I need it.

                                   JOHN

This is preposterous, we have two

cars. I will drive you whenever I

can, and you have your mum's car

                         you can use.

               She lies down.

                                   VICKY

                             (to the sky)

                         Sometimes people just want stupid

                         shit. You know the feeling,

                         wouldn't you do anything for

                         something you really, really need?

Anything. Just like you do. Dad. I

really need a car. I really need to

get out of this fucked up house

                         sometimes.

                                    JOHN

                         Mind your language...

               Beat

                                   VICKY

I will mind whatever I say but I

                         need a car.

John sits down on another lounge chair, his head in his

               hands, looking at the grass.

                                   JOHN

                         Vicky...

She shuts her eyes and doesn't react. His chest feels tight

               again.

                                   JOHN (CONT'D)

                             (calmly)

Fine, you can have your own car if

it is that important to you, just

stop this. Then, I want to hear no

                         more about it.

Vicky turns away from him, terrified.

                                   JOHN (CONT'D)

                         Did you hear me?

                                   VICKY

                         Yes.

Exit John. Vicky sits up, she turns to see if he is gone.

When the coast is clear she starts crying.

        24     INT. KITCHEN

                                   JOHN

                         Shit

He leans on the table to catch his breath. Shakes his head.

               It hits him what happened.

        25     IN. BEDROOM

John waking up in sweat again, grabbing his chest.

Alicia stirs, then sits up slightly. John turns to sit on the

edge of the bed, he is trying to calm down.

                                   ALICIA

You have become a dangerous man.

He sits, he looks at her. She pulls a blanket over her. He

bends his head and prays, like he is at a wake.

                                   ALICIA (CONT'D)

All these years. When we met, I

knew you would be the end of me,

this would be it. I was so unhappy

in Madrid. I chose you, to get

pregnant. Maybe a death wish. No, I

know. I can see it in Vicky, she

can't hide anything from me. The

car, if you loved her, you would

                         have said no.

That would have been love, but you

don't know it. Your own daughter,

she would have believed you and she

                         would have had peace.

John looks up. She reaches out her hand. On his knees he

               holds it.
